Step by Step Video Tutorial

If you’re a visual learner like me, follow along with the free pattern using this step by step tutorial!

What is a Charm Pack?

Charm packs are one of my favorite precut fabrics! 5” squares are super versatile and I love how each pack comes with a variety of different fabrics that all coordinate. I don’t have the best eye for coordinating fabrics so I love it when the work is done for me!

If you’re not familiar with charm packs, I’ll give you a quick primer!

A charm pack is a bundle of 5” precut squares. Charm packs typically come with 42 5” squares included. Most charm packs feature a full quilt fabric line so you’ll get a sample of each fabric in the collection. It’s normal to get duplicate prints in the same charm pack because most fabric lines do not have 42 unique prints.

Charm packs are also called charm squares or 5” stackers.

Charm packs are just one type of precut fabric. Jelly Rolls (2.5” strips) and Layer Cakes (10” squares) are other types of popular types of precuts.

Precuts are amazing because they’re the perfect way to get started quilting as a beginner and you can make a quilt so much faster by cutting out the cutting (heh, see what I did there?).

If you’re looking for a place to purchase charm packs, I recommend searching on Etsy and Fat Quarter Shop. Between these two places, you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for!

Charming Sawtooth Free Baby Quilt Pattern

I’ve done several charm pack quilts and one thing that’s always bummed me out is the number of leftover charm squares I have at the end of my project. I used a charm pack for my first quilt and I actually thought I did something wrong when I had charm squares leftover!

That’s why I designed the Charming Sawtooth quilt pattern to use every charm square in a pack. This quilt is very low waste and I bet you already have the fabric in your stash! The baby size pattern uses only one charm pack and one yard of fabric! Isn’t that fantastic?

Alright, enough chit-chatting – let’s get to the free quilt pattern!

Block Assembly

The Charming Sawtooth quilt pattern uses the 2 at a time half square triangle method for assembly. If you’re unfamiliar with this method, let me show you how awesome it is!

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) Fabric A 5″ square.

2. Pair your marked square with another (1) Fabric A 5″ square. The Fabric A pairings are meant to be scrappy and random, so don’t think too much about which fabrics from your charm pack you are pairing together.

3. With the right sides together, sew 1/4″ away on both sides of the marked line.

4. Cut along the center marked line to get (2) Half Square Triangle (HST) units. Press seams toward the darker fabric and trim to 4.5″. Each pair of squares will make two identical HSTs.

That’s it! This super-simple method creates two identical half-square triangles at once. This will speed up your assembly and this method is perfect for chain piecing to help you assemble your quilt even faster.

Charming Sawtooth Pattern Features

I know you have a stack of charm packs collecting dust in your fabric stash. It’s time to grab those 5” squares and turn them into beautiful quilts!

Here’s a few more things I LOVE about the Charming Sawtooth pattern!

It’s low waste! The baby size uses one full charm pack and one yard of fabric. What could be better? If you’re looking for a larger pattern, the PDF pattern (available for purchase here) uses two full charm packs for the small throw pattern and four charm packs for the large throw pattern.

Shop your stash! All you need is one charm pack and one yard of background fabric to get started!

Beginner friendly! Assembly will be a breeze with the easy-to-follow instructions and graphics in this pattern.

Quick assembly! This pattern uses the two-at-a-time half square triangle assembly method. Pair that with chain piecing and this quilt will come together in an afternoon!
