What is Flosstube?

What in the world is Flosstube? Great question! If you’re interested in cross stitch, you may have come across Flosstube videos on YouTube or maybe you’ve seen folks talk about it on social media. I’ve noticed that many prolific stitchers have never even heard the term, so let’s get your question answered!

What is Flosstube?

Flosstube is a community of creators that post YouTube videos about their stitching. That’s it! That’s what it is. “Floss” is of course referencing the embroidery floss that stitchers use and “tube” is referencing YouTube. Flosstube is just a subset of YouTube videos that are stitching related.

The best part is that Flosstube is not only for cross stitchers! You’ll find a variety of crafts within Flosstube videos. Some of the more popular crafts that folks showcase include quilting, crocheting, knitting, and embroidery.

When I was first learning how to cross stitch, I came across these videos by accident. I had no clue what I was clicking on. But once I caught on to what these videos were about, I was hooked! And I think you will be too.

How do I find Flosstube videos?

You can find Flosstube videos by going to YouTube and typing “Flosstube” into the search bar. Seriously, it’s that easy! Each individual person usually puts the word “Flosstube” in their video title, so you’ll find thousands of videos if you search this way. Browse the selection that pops up and choose a video that looks interesting to you to get started.

Because there are SO many different Flosstubers out there, that means that there is a little bit of something for everyone. Browsing the selection similar to finding podcasters or other YouTubers that you’re interested in. It might take a bit of time to find a personality that you click with, but you will definitely find one (probably several!).

What can I expect to see in a video?

Flosstube videos are as unique as each individual creator, but you can expect to see some similarities between videos. You’ll usually see works in progress, finished objects and some new patterns, notions or supplies that they’ve recently purchased. You may also see tutorials, giveaways and references to other Flosstubers or designers.

You will see videos of various lengths; anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour. Oftentimes cross stitchers will watch Flosstube videos when they are stitching, so the longer videos can be nice if you’re sitting down for a long stitching session.

It’s impossible to list all of the things you’ll see within the videos, so be sure to check out a variety of different YouTube channels so you can see all that the Flosstube community has to offer!

Can anyone create videos?

Yes! If you make a video about your stitching, then you can call yourself a Flosstuber! There is no barrier to entry and all you need to do is film yourself and upload it. You don’t need fancy equipment or video editing skills, either. Many folks record their videos in one shot and viewers don’t mind a few stumbled words or short pauses.

I started to create my own Flosstube videos in February 2021 and the cross stitching community has opened me with welcome arms. As a beginner stitcher, it was a bit nerve-wracking to put myself out there but I quickly learned that it’s not as scary as it may seem. If you have the itch to create your own Flosstube channel, do it!

Now head over to YouTube and watch a few videos yourself. If you’ve never heard of this community before, be sure to share it with your stitchy friends! I’m always amazed at the amount of stitchers who have no idea that this Flosstube community exists. (Seriously, how many times have I said Flosstube in this blog post?)
