Cutting up yardage into strips is a part of making every quilt. Between the quilt top, sashing, borders and binding, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll be cutting strips of fabric for each quilt that you make. Fabric strips are an important part of quilting!
Another important but way less fun part of quilting? Math. As you’re planning your next quilt you may wonder exactly how many strips you can cut from your fabric.
Instead of breaking out your calculator every time you need to cut up yardage, use this table to help you figure out how many strips you can get from one yard of fabric.

If you want to keep this information handy, I’ve created a free downloadable PDF that includes the quilt strip width table and cutting diagrams for the most common quilt strip sizes.
Precut fabric strips called Honey Buns and Jelly Rolls can speed up the cutting process, but they can be expensive and are not offered in every color. Cutting your own strips from yardage often makes more sense.
Keep scrolling for cutting diagrams of the most common quilt strip sizes and how much fabric you need to make your own Honey Buns and Jelly Rolls.
